History of Correlated Magnetics Research

Scientist and inventor Larry Fullerton initially conceived the idea on an evening in March of 2008 as he pondered creation of a self-assembling toy for his grandchildren.  He imagined an action figure’s legs, arms, head, and torso shaken inside a box until they formed a complete anatomy.  What could serve to hold these constituent parts together?  Magnets?  No, he thought, because magnets would not discriminate among the parts.  Unless… they were encoded somehow.  Larry’s vast experience in the science of communications and radar technologies – specifically correlation methodology and coding theory – led him to wonder about the application of these principles to magnetism in the spatial domain. He built the first prototype demonstrator to test his idea – and correlated magnetics was born. The first patent was filed on the core technology in April of 2008 and Correlated Magnetics Research LLC was founded two months later in June.

Correlated magnetics is a revolutionary scientific breakthrough that enables magnets to be “programmed” such that they can produce never-before-seen behaviors far beyond the simple “attract” and “repel” of conventional single-axis dipole magnets. This new technology can be used both to improve existing products currently employing magnets and to empower innovative new products in applications where conventional magnets were never considered practical.

Today magnets are nearly ubiquitous, but there have been few truly groundbreaking developments in magnetics technology for many years until the discovery of correlated magnetics.
